TTMYL: 1/31/10: The SinglEP

The first installment of the Sunday 'SinglEP'. The name of the EP isn't so creative, but it represents what songs over took my ear..aka being single. Below each song you'll find an explanation and what not.

Tracklist:

1. Charles Hamilton- Hockey Kitty (Off of the upcoming mixtape The Binge Vol. 3: Charles Hamilton's Last Mixtape)

One of the weirdest mc's in the game today. Charles Hamilton has made his comeback and his goodbye? In December, CH released Normalcy (which is a personal favorite of mine). When it looked like Charles was back and ready to tear, he releases Hockey Kitty off of his "last mixtape". In a recent UStream showing, Hamilton told his fans that he would still be in the music game but would be exploring other elements of music. Why? I'm not too sure. Hamilton goes over Jay Z's 'Thank You'.

2. Kyle Lucas- ThisLuv (Off of the upcoming mixtape It's Always Sunny in Marietta)

Back when I used to write for The Daily Chorus, we helped develop bands into what would benefit them the best. One of those bands was Georgia's Vonnequtt. The lead singer is Kyle Lucas, who's been rapping and sorts for years. He's one of my personal favorite underground mc's in the game right now and in ThisLuv, he goes over Maroon 5's beat with the help of his band mates. No thoughts on this song, just straight fire.

3. Big Sean- Super Dupa Lemonade (Off of the upcoming mixtape Finally Famous Vol. 3)

I get to see Big Sean this month (February) with his boy Mike Posner. Big Sean goes over Gucci Mane's beat right here and I've been listening to this song for three days straight. With over 30 plays already, you can tell this song is where it's at. He even gives Darko Milicek a shoutout. C'mon now.

4. Drake- Zone

When I first heard the track, I was disgusted. However, it's grown on me for a while. Becoming a quick favorite.

5. Jarrod Gorbel- Ten Years Older (From JG's Daytrotter Session)

One of my favorite websites works with one of my favorite solo artists. Former Honorary Title frontman Jarrod Gorbel recently visited the Daytrotter studios to record the famous 'Daytrotter Session'. Gorbel plays songs from his new EP as well as an Honorary Title b-side. Worth the download. Listen to the track and tell me you understand the message.

6. Emilio Rojas- Tic Toc (Off of the mixtape The Natural)

A guy I forgot on my top mixtapes list. Emilio Rojas dropped one of the more surprising mixtapes of 2009 with The Natural. He hooked up with DJ Green Lantern to bring you this one. The track Tic Toc talks about a relationship, with the title explaining what's happening.

'Tic toc time is slipping away'

MP3: Joell Ortiz- Exhibit H(aiti)

You all know by now the beat. You know, that Jay Electronica breath taking beat. The one we all wish we had owned. Well it seems that every rapper in the biz today is going over the track. So why did Joell Ortiz go over it twice? To wake us up and realize what's going on in his mind with the earthquake in Haiti.

Album of the Week: Tanya Morgan- Brooklynati (1/31/10)

Album of the Week: Tanya Morgan- Brooklynati (1/31/10)

For the next year or so, I'm going to be posting my favorite album of the week. Along with that, I'm going to be posting my top 5 played songs of the week with a little summery about each song and what it means to me.

This week, I would like to dedicate my post to Brooklyn/Cincinnati trio Tanya Morgan. In 2009, the group released Brooklynati, which is a personal favorite of mine. You don't normally hear hiphop groups produce tunes like this. Besides PacDiv and a few others, hiphop trios don't really live anymore. Tanya Morgan's Brooklynati embeds the different elements of two different cities. It's interesting to listen to the different messages in each song from either Donwill, Ilyas, and Von Pea. Take for instance the track 'She's Gone aka "Without U"'. The tracks contains the accompanieship of Phonte (of Little Brother) and Brittany Bosco. The track is jumbled with interesting lyrics with a perfect Sunday afternoon beat.

Brooklynati is an album of a make believe world. That world can be interpreted by anyone in any manner. For myself, it's wonderful. The album also includes California rapper Blu and other acts.

I hope you all enjoy this album as much as I have. It's worth the money you spend.

TMO09- #1: Currensy/Wiz Khalifa- How Fly (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #1: Curren$y/Wiz Khalifa- How Fly

I remember when random tracks from this project were dropping. First it was 'Car Service', then it was 'The Checkpoint'. Two songs that made this project so anticipated for myself. Taylor Gang and Fly Society team up right here to issue out my favorite mixtape of 2009, How Fly. The combination of Wiz's high pitched rapping with Curren$y's low modest rap just sets this mixtape apart from anyone else. It's been spinning for months. The tape gets played at least three times a week and is favored by all of my peers. The story of the mixtape is pretty simple: smoke a lot. But besides that message, the tape is just flawless. The only downside of the tape is the production. How both Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa sent tracks via email makes the tape specialer.

Do your self a favor and jump on both of these artists bangwagon. Wiz Khalifa just released Deal or No Deal and is released two more mixtapes, with the first one called Orange Juice and Kush. Curren$y also just released an album, The Jet Files. He will be releasing his next installment called Smokee Robinson on Super Bowl Sunday.

Video: Big Sean - Supa Dupa Lemonade Freestyle

Big Sean
goes over Gucci Mane's beat as well as Curren$y's 'Lemon Kush". This is pretty dirty, not going to lie. Also, I could use an mp3 to this. Finally Famous Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in Mid-February. I'm pretty stoked for it. If you haven't downloaded Big Sean's UNKOWBIGSEAN you should do it immediately.

TMO09- #2: Drake- So Far Gone (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #2: Drake- So Far Gone

When I listen to radio hits, I usually hear Owl City's 'Fireflies' along with Jay Z's 'Empire State of Mind'. When I mean I hear these tracks, they are on rotation all day. I practically know all the words to Jay's The Blueprint 3 due to New York radio. Unfortunately (For myself) but fortunate for him, the same can be said about Degrassi star/Canadian artist Drake.

Drake released So Far Gone back in February of 2009. That's when the hype really started to erupt. You don't normally hear mixtapes that can be considered albums..or for this case a mixtape that's better than many of the albums released in 2009. Drizzy Drake's So Far Gone was a staple in American pop culture this year. Possibly one of the best mixtapes of all time. His shows are always sold out, his tracks now contain today's hottest artists. Not enough can be said. Drake is going to re-shape hiphop in 2010.

Standout Tracks: Houstatlantavegas, November 18th, Congratulations

RIP J.D. Salinger

I'm dedicating this post to J.D. Salinger. Salinger died today of natural causes. He's lived one of the more interesting lives of an American. You'd never think one work of literature would shake a nation as much as it did. After all, we all have a little Holden Caulfield in us.

With that, The New Yorker has posted a postscript of Salinger's work. Check it out. Salinger was 91 years of age.

TMO09- #3: Wiz Khalifa- Burn After Rolling (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #3: Wiz Khalifa- Burn After Rolling

One of my favorite rappers in the game today. Wiz Khalifa can brighten anyone's day. Whether it be by smoking a lot of pot for our amusement or by dropping tracks like we drop bombs. He released a slew of mixtapes in 2009; but while Burn After Rolling wasn't my favorite of his, I sure did enjoy it. B.A.R starts off with the titled track, which set the mood for the whole tape: laid back, bumpin jams. Songs such as Miles, The Thrill, and If I Were A Lame had me listening for a good month until his album Deal or No Deal released. I still bump this on car rides and in school. One of the classic tapes of 2009.

He is rumored to be releasing two new mixtapes in 2010.

MP3: Wale- CJ Genesis Ustream

Wale
is one of my favorite freshmen rappers. Seems everything he does is golden. His live shows are dope, just like his freestyles. On January 26, 2009; Wale asked anyone for a beat so he could freestyle over it. Well, he did it over Ustream courtesy of CJ Genesis.

TMO09- #4: Tyga- Black Thoughts (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #4: Tyga- Black Thoughts

I'm not a huge fan of Young Money. They get a bad rep because of their leader. But besides that, the music industry is eating up a lot of their current artists. However, it's refreshing to see Tyga do his best to bring light to the label. Tyga released one of my favorite songs of 2009 of his mixtape The Potiential called 'RIP Dolla', for the recently deceased rapper Dolla. But I'm not talking about that mixtape.

Tyga released Black Thoughts in November of 2009. When I say this mixtape had me hooked, I mean I was listening to it for a good month straight. He teamed up with DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar, who you'll see did a number on my top mixtapes list. I can't really explain the mixtape that well, I'm still speechless.

TMO09- #5: B.o.B- B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #5: B.o.B- B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray

When one thinks of Atlanta, we tend to picture Akon and Lil Wayne. Two artists who generally don't really represent their area as well as they should. However, rapper B.o.B is doing his best to try to shine some light on the autotuned city. What makes Bobby Ray so unique is he plays instruments such as guitar, piano, and drums. Three instruments that Lil Wayne can't play (Unless you consider Rebirth a 'good' album). B.o.B released his mixtape B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray, which is a battle between Bob's moniker and his real name.

The tape is dope, containing beats that one wouldn't even think that someone would even try rapping on. Twenty two tracks of pure musicianship, something many many musicians do not contain nowadays.

Being one of my favorite bands have broken up, I've decided to post this. I hope everyone here who views the blog gives The Honorary Title a chance. It's not hip-hop, it's not indie. TMO09- #6: Wale- Back To The Feature (Mixtape)

Top Mixtape of 2009- #6: Wale- Back To The Feature

When Wale announced he was releasing his next installment of dope music, I was amped. However, I wasn't amped for the six month delay that the tape met. In June of 2009, DC rapper Wale finally released Back To The Feature. The name of the mixtape says it all, as the mixtape contains over seventeen different artists going along on Wale's beats and adding that special to the tracks. The mixtape was what I bumped at the parties I attended over the summer and I still play the tape sometimes, not as much cause Attention: Deficit is dope. The tape contains artists such as Joe Budden, Curren$y, Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, and throw in J. Cole for some more support.

This tape isn't worth passing up. Oh and 9th Wonder produced the whole thing. Enough said.

TMO09- #7: Lil Wayne- No Ceilings (Mixtape)

Top Mixtape of 2009- #7: Lil Wayne- No Ceilings

Lil Wayne. As much as I want to hate him, he gave me seventeen reasons why I shouldn't. Those seventeen reasons represent the seventeen songs on his new mixtape No Ceilings. Wayne goes over a slew of hits throughout 2009 and destroys most of them. Take for instance 'Wasted', which could possibly be the next best pump up anthem at your sport venue. I'm done talking, let Wayne explain himself. Oh by the way, thank god he released this before he was sentenced because that Rebirth album is a disaster.

TMO09- #8: BOOGNIGHTS- The ARTiste (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #8: BOOGNIGHTS- The ARTiste

One thing I've realized about 2009's music scene: there's always something great that isn't always hyped about. Take for instance Spring Valley, New York rapper BOOGNIGHTS. For my own sake, I discovered Boog right before he released his mixtape The ARTiste. To put the mixtape in five words: inspirational, change, future, potential, breath taking.

If there's one artist I cannot wait to see blossom, it has to be BOOGNIGHTS. Take my word, he'll be around for a while.

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #9- TiRon- Ketchup

For a while, I was thinking the West Coast rap scene was dead. Then I stumbled across TiRon's Ketchup. When listening to this, I see a lot of potential possibilities from the young-in out in California. Those possibilities are going to be endless. He'll be released his next tape Mustard in February? Top Mixtape of 2009: #10 Donnis- Diary of an ATL Brave

I'll tell you this, if Donnis released this earlier in 2009, the mix tape would be way higher on my list. I still bump this mix tape a bunch and enjoy it thoroughly. Donnis released Diary of an ATL Brave, if you can imagine Outcast with a mix of Nas/Ludacris. I mean, he's not no Nas but he's going to be splashing a lot of water in 2010.

Review/Download: Sha Stimuli- The Break-Up (Mixtape)

When performers release mixtapes, we never want to hear the unofficial mixtapes. The ones where we’ve heard every song before and it’s just filled with a bunch of DJ shout outs. Occasionally, we’ll get an interesting mixtape. Take for instance University of Delaware Alumni Sha Stimuli.

In 2008, Stimuli released a slew of mixtapes part of his '12 Mixtapes For 12 Months.' One of those mixtapes that stood out is The Break-Up. The concept behind this dope tape is to explain a simple break up, while he has thoughts on coming back cause he still feels something. Sixteen songs of pure rhymes never gets old.

I know I'm somewhat late with posting this and all. But I really don't care. I've been bumping Jay Electronica before all of you started jumping on the bandwagon. Whether you download Who The Fuck is Jay Electronica or just find all the exhibit singles, you'll truly appreciate this one.

The concept of Victory is to show how music doesn't need a name to be considered a song. There are 27 tracks on the tape, all untitled. You'll hear some familiar tracks then a bunch of dope tracks. Enjoy it.

Review: Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson- Break Up

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson- Break Up

What's the definition of an actor/actress? In our eyes, we only think they are good for acting like something else for our enjoyment. One sees how Robin Williams can play a serious role (Good Will Hunting) and how some can play goofy roles, like Will Smith (Men in Black). However, as time roles, we see many movie screen stars create music. Most notably Zooey Deschanel and Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson released her debut album in 2007, entitled Anywhere I Lay My Head. To say the least, the album didn't even meet par. It was terrible. The Tom Waits covers that she killed plus the over-production on her beautiful voice. But that didn't stop her. Recently, she teamed up with indie-god Pete Yorn and the both of them released Break Up.

I'm going to let everyone else be the judge of this album. For me, it's played every Sunday. Give it a listen sometime, you won't be disappointed.

Standout Tracks: “Wear and Tear” and “Shampoo”

Download: B.o.B- Nothin' On You (Featuring Bruno Mars) MP3

B.o.B aka Bobby Ray. Who is he? You all should know by now he's that rapper who reminds you of Outcast and Ludacris. He has that awesome single 'Don't Break My Heart' and now he delivers the first single off his upcoming album, "B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray". The single is called 'Nothin' On You' which features the great support of Bruno Mars.

Below you can find the lyrics of the track and you'll realize soon why I adore his beats and rhymes.

Download: Mickey Factz- thedarkphoenix: ALPHA (2010)

Yeah I'm back. After a well needed break, I'm back. Just like Charles Hamilton and now Mickey Factz. True: we all don't really know who Mickey Factz is. He's appeared in a few songs and whatnot. He released his mixtape, "The Leak Vol. 2: The Inspiration" which featured artists such as Drake, The Cool Kids, and Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. For the past month or so, Factz has been brewing a storm for his new EP/Mixtape "thedarkphoenix: ALPHA". The tape contains Mickey doing his thing on a slew of songs by the group Phoenix.

To say the least, this EP is pure dope. Factz's goes hard on every track. Below is a download link as well a little description of each song by Mickey himself.

download: mediafire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sunrise

With all of my projects, I let all of my emotions and feelings out on one song. Just me writing as much as I possibly can and letting the feel of the beat dictate my tone. At the time of me painting this record, I wanted to have a feeling of overcoming. In hindsight that’s what the sun does everyday, overcome the night. I used the sun as a metaphor to convey these emotions.

[Color/s: Red, Blue & Green]

2. Amnesia

A lot of people forget that I can actually rap. I get that feeling a lot. All the time. So with how I approach my freestyles, I try to spit over instrumentals and loops that nobody would dare use. Justice is one of my favorite groups and “Let There Be Light” is one of my favorite records from them. So I did what I did best: Paint.

[Color/s: Green]

3. Turn It Up

A preview of what’s to come in 2010. This song is featured on DJ Amplive’s project dropping this year. Enjoy it while you can.

[Color/s: Red & Green]

4. Still I Rise

Whatever happened to the anthems? What happened to the songs to help us get through struggles? I’ve felt down at times. I’ve hit rock bottom. I’ve lost my mind a couple of times that I can remember. However, through it all, still I rise. Maya Angelou’s famous poem is a prophetic message for me in my life. Nothing will or can tear me down as long as I’m breathing. And if I can believe that, so should you.

[Color/s: Blue & Green]

5. Ashes

In the midst of enjoying life, there is pain. During the recording process, that’s exactly what I felt. I know how to place my life in records very well. For example, when certain people get depressed, they smoke. Its like an extension of sighing almost. I named the song ashes to remind us that when we go through certain things, the unnecessary things, then it’s time to dump those ashes. Ashes fall off the end of a cigarette very easily and when u fall for someone so should minuscule problems.

[Color/s: Blue]

6. S/ecrets T/hat D/estroy

The premise and subject of this song is often strayed away from. I wanted to touch base on something that’s affecting the world day by day. Usually when we get wind of a secret, we’re supposed to hold onto it until death. Ironically, the particular secrets I talk about bring forth death, destruction and despair.

[Color/s: Red]

7. Contemplations Of A King

I was born a prince. All of us are born into royalty. In order to inherit the upper echelon of what’s inevitable, you have to figure out life’s quarrels. There are so many hurdles to deter you. Succeeding in conquering these quarrels takes patience, wisdom and contemplation. Through that, you will realize your true potential.

[Color/s: Red & Blue]

8. Sunset

The Phoenix is a mythical creature who rises from the ashes, creating a surge of fire to reach its peak. Watching the sunset is like experiencing the gates of heaven open up before your eyes. Most people have seen so many wonders in life always anticipating the next greatest thing. When in reality, their life is the greatest experience they will live. We must live each day like the phoenix, as the sun sets to see the unimaginable of the next.
