TTMYL: 1/31/10: The SinglEP

The first installment of the Sunday 'SinglEP'. The name of the EP isn't so creative, but it represents what songs over took my ear..aka being single. Below each song you'll find an explanation and what not.

Tracklist:

1. Charles Hamilton- Hockey Kitty (Off of the upcoming mixtape The Binge Vol. 3: Charles Hamilton's Last Mixtape)

One of the weirdest mc's in the game today. Charles Hamilton has made his comeback and his goodbye? In December, CH released Normalcy (which is a personal favorite of mine). When it looked like Charles was back and ready to tear, he releases Hockey Kitty off of his "last mixtape". In a recent UStream showing, Hamilton told his fans that he would still be in the music game but would be exploring other elements of music. Why? I'm not too sure. Hamilton goes over Jay Z's 'Thank You'.

2. Kyle Lucas- ThisLuv (Off of the upcoming mixtape It's Always Sunny in Marietta)

Back when I used to write for The Daily Chorus, we helped develop bands into what would benefit them the best. One of those bands was Georgia's Vonnequtt. The lead singer is Kyle Lucas, who's been rapping and sorts for years. He's one of my personal favorite underground mc's in the game right now and in ThisLuv, he goes over Maroon 5's beat with the help of his band mates. No thoughts on this song, just straight fire.

3. Big Sean- Super Dupa Lemonade (Off of the upcoming mixtape Finally Famous Vol. 3)

I get to see Big Sean this month (February) with his boy Mike Posner. Big Sean goes over Gucci Mane's beat right here and I've been listening to this song for three days straight. With over 30 plays already, you can tell this song is where it's at. He even gives Darko Milicek a shoutout. C'mon now.

4. Drake- Zone

When I first heard the track, I was disgusted. However, it's grown on me for a while. Becoming a quick favorite.

5. Jarrod Gorbel- Ten Years Older (From JG's Daytrotter Session)

One of my favorite websites works with one of my favorite solo artists. Former Honorary Title frontman Jarrod Gorbel recently visited the Daytrotter studios to record the famous 'Daytrotter Session'. Gorbel plays songs from his new EP as well as an Honorary Title b-side. Worth the download. Listen to the track and tell me you understand the message.

6. Emilio Rojas- Tic Toc (Off of the mixtape The Natural)

A guy I forgot on my top mixtapes list. Emilio Rojas dropped one of the more surprising mixtapes of 2009 with The Natural. He hooked up with DJ Green Lantern to bring you this one. The track Tic Toc talks about a relationship, with the title explaining what's happening.

MP3: Joell Ortiz- Exhibit H(aiti)

You all know by now the beat. You know, that Jay Electronica breath taking beat. The one we all wish we had owned. Well it seems that every rapper in the biz today is going over the track. So why did Joell Ortiz go over it twice? To wake us up and realize what's going on in his mind with the earthquake in Haiti.

Album of the Week: Tanya Morgan- Brooklynati (1/31/10)

Album of the Week: Tanya Morgan- Brooklynati (1/31/10)

For the next year or so, I'm going to be posting my favorite album of the week. Along with that, I'm going to be posting my top 5 played songs of the week with a little summery about each song and what it means to me.

This week, I would like to dedicate my post to Brooklyn/Cincinnati trio Tanya Morgan. In 2009, the group released Brooklynati, which is a personal favorite of mine. You don't normally hear hiphop groups produce tunes like this. Besides PacDiv and a few others, hiphop trios don't really live anymore. Tanya Morgan's Brooklynati embeds the different elements of two different cities. It's interesting to listen to the different messages in each song from either Donwill, Ilyas, and Von Pea. Take for instance the track 'She's Gone aka "Without U"'. The tracks contains the accompanieship of Phonte (of Little Brother) and Brittany Bosco. The track is jumbled with interesting lyrics with a perfect Sunday afternoon beat.

Brooklynati is an album of a make believe world. That world can be interpreted by anyone in any manner. For myself, it's wonderful. The album also includes California rapper Blu and other acts.

I hope you all enjoy this album as much as I have. It's worth the money you spend.

TMO09- #1: Currensy/Wiz Khalifa- How Fly (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #1: Curren$y/Wiz Khalifa- How Fly

I remember when random tracks from this project were dropping. First it was 'Car Service', then it was 'The Checkpoint'. Two songs that made this project so anticipated for myself. Taylor Gang and Fly Society team up right here to issue out my favorite mixtape of 2009, How Fly. The combination of Wiz's high pitched rapping with Curren$y's low modest rap just sets this mixtape apart from anyone else. It's been spinning for months. The tape gets played at least three times a week and is favored by all of my peers. The story of the mixtape is pretty simple: smoke a lot. But besides that message, the tape is just flawless. The only downside of the tape is the production. How both Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa sent tracks via email makes the tape specialer.

Do your self a favor and jump on both of these artists bangwagon. Wiz Khalifa just released Deal or No Deal and is released two more mixtapes, with the first one called Orange Juice and Kush. Curren$y also just released an album, The Jet Files. He will be releasing his next installment called Smokee Robinson on Super Bowl Sunday.

Video: Big Sean - Supa Dupa Lemonade Freestyle

Big Sean
goes over Gucci Mane's beat as well as Curren$y's 'Lemon Kush". This is pretty dirty, not going to lie. Also, I could use an mp3 to this. Finally Famous Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in Mid-February. I'm pretty stoked for it. If you haven't downloaded Big Sean's UNKOWBIGSEAN you should do it immediately.

TMO09- #2: Drake- So Far Gone (Mixtape)

Top Mixtapes of 2009- #2: Drake- So Far Gone

When I listen to radio hits, I usually hear Owl City's 'Fireflies' along with Jay Z's 'Empire State of Mind'. When I mean I hear these tracks, they are on rotation all day. I practically know all the words to Jay's The Blueprint 3 due to New York radio. Unfortunately (For myself) but fortunate for him, the same can be said about Degrassi star/Canadian artist Drake.

Drake released So Far Gone back in February of 2009. That's when the hype really started to erupt. You don't normally hear mixtapes that can be considered albums..or for this case a mixtape that's better than many of the albums released in 2009. Drizzy Drake's So Far Gone was a staple in American pop culture this year. Possibly one of the best mixtapes of all time. His shows are always sold out, his tracks now contain today's hottest artists. Not enough can be said. Drake is going to re-shape hiphop in 2010.

RIP J.D. Salinger

I'm dedicating this post to J.D. Salinger. Salinger died today of natural causes. He's lived one of the more interesting lives of an American. You'd never think one work of literature would shake a nation as much as it did. After all, we all have a little Holden Caulfield in us.

With that, The New Yorker has posted a postscript of Salinger's work. Check it out. Salinger was 91 years of age.
