Live Bootleg: Andy Hull- Live @ Zia Records in Phoenix Arizona on April 12 2008
After seeing Andy a couple times solo, I've come to enjoy his music more each time. I wrapped up a set I found on the internet and hope it could spread the same sound to your ears. Go support Manchester Orchestra, Kevin Devine and Brand New.

Volume's Pleasure: This Town Needs Guns (4/12/08)
Volume's Pleasure: This Town Needs Guns (4/12/08)
I've heard a good amount of buzz from certain websites about bands. This band I've stumbled across a while back, but really didn't pay too much attention to. I was re-introduced to them recently. They go by the name of This Town Needs Guns.
Its just the same as it was before.
Same faces there to hit the floor.
My legs have carried me far.
There’s still strength enough for one more.
At times, the england natives bring back the good days of Indie rock. TTNG brings resemblance to American Football, Braid, and at times Death Cab For Cutie. In 2007, they released a split EP with Cats And Cats And Cats which really caught my ear. Listen to the song featured below and see why I am enjoying this band so much. Oh, by the way; they have a new album out available on iTunes.
This Town Needs Guns- 26 is dancier than 4 (MP3)

Throwback Thursdays: Cursive- The Ugly Organ
So I am starting a new segment called "Throwback Thursdays." Each week, I'll basically give my thoughts on an album that was released in the past that I have been playing.
To start it off, the first dosage of Throwback Thursdays will be Cursive's 2003 release in "The Ugly Organ." Originally, I wasn't a huge Cursive fan. You could say it was one of those groups that caught your ear as you matured. Virtually, I was listening to pop punk stuff at the time of the release, that I didn't discover this record until about 2005.
I realized how rare and meaningful some of the lyrics are. Some believe that Kasher made up this organists life; not comparing his life to the album. Maybe he's been using symbolism to cover it all up? Who knows. The album is probably one of my top ten favorite ever. I could find meaning to about each song that I've listened to on this record.
So while we all wait for something new since Happy Hallow, Cursive have been playing a couple shows around the U.S. Debuting new songs and such; but don't miss this album.

But I'm ready to settle down now
Yeah, I'm ready to leave that wrecking ball behind
I could be your carpenter
And you could be my twinkling north star over the desert sky

I could be your carpenter

Tokyo Police Club- Elephant Shell
Tokyo Police Club- Elephant Shell

I remember the first time I heard Tokyo Police Club. It was about two years ago when A Lesson In Crime dropped. It didn’t really catch my ear so much; but it was enjoyable. I completely forgot about the band for about a year. Until the Smith EP came out, the band was second tier on my play list. But it seems as if one of the most unique bands are giving people music to drawl to in Elephant Shell.
Recently, many bands of this small group of bands have been getting a lot of publicity from major television stations. Such as Vampire Weekend who virtually don’t have to do anything; and just like that they sell over 100,000 on their debut record. Maybe it’s because the album lacks originality and that’s what most fans like. With Elephant Shell, you aren’t going to get that. Headed by Dave Monks, the band is content with keeping a steady album demonstrating many different emotions and feelings.
This Canadian foursome first got the album buzz going with the leaking of the song “In A Cave.” It seems as if TPK took a whole different approach to their sound ever since signing to Saddle Creek. Did they move more mainstream? No. But it’s as if there’s more of a western feel to everything. At times, the song reminds me of Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. Which to many; including myself, is a good thing. “Juno” could be one of the most obvious excuses for a girl not to have sex with someone. Monks acts out frustration throughout the song with haunting piano clumps from Graham Wright.
“You and your soapy eyes
Called it off so late at night
But your hand's on your heart
Cause your head's always right
Juno, you're tired”
Tokyo Police Club- Juno (MP3)
The most impressive concept about this album is how it never becomes boring. Yeah, it might get tiring how the band is always full of life through drum beats and guitar riffs. But, it’s a huge plus in my book. Songs such as “Tessellate”, just make one want to learn how to play drums. Drummer Greg Alsop doesn’t stop at all and continues it through the softest song on the album “Listen to the Math.”
With so many bands coming out with familiar styles to catch the eyes of major websites, it’s good to see one actually setting an example for performing music well. Not only live, but on disc also. Tokyo Police Club have made huge strides since releasing A Lesson In Crime. One could defiantly see how much the band matured as one. So what does Tokyo Police Club offer you? Eleven songs of unique guitar, hard slapping bass, and overall a great album.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin- Pershing
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin- Pershing

The seasons are changing. So does the music. I find myself bundled up at night in the winter listening to David Bazan or Pedro The Lion. But, I was pondering in my English class last week.. About all the new, tasteful releases being dropped. It’s about time our ears have something to dine to. Indie band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin surely helped me support the claim of enjoying new music. Not only is the name one of the weirdest names; the music speaks different for the name.
Boris Yeltsin was the first Russian president in Russia. Funny, I’m currently learning about what he did to Russia. Put the destruction of the parliament building and the alcoholism to the side, he was a good man. SSLYBY bring destruction; but it’s through sound. The quintet is headed by vocalist Philip Dickey and company. For the many who haven’t heard of these guys, they released their debut album “Broom” back in 2005. It was later re-issued on Polyvinyl in 2006; which contributed to their publicity. In the previous release, SSLY,BY demonstrated many different styles to their sound. With catchy lyrics using Pangaea as a relationship; they should have kept going in that direction. But the album showed different sides to the band and left the listener with a question. Will the band ever settle with a strong sound?
It’s safe the say that these Missouri natives have found their sound in Pershing. The sophomore record opens up with their first leaked song “Glue Girls.” Philip tells his side of the story with love. Quoted as saying “tell me I should be looking for love with some other girl.”; it show’s how love sucks. The song doesn’t really resemble any sob stories as the song continues to grow in sound and reminds one of The Beach Boys. Another key tune on the record is “Dead Right.” The song popped up in my mind as one of those songs you drive along to when returning from the beach. Ironically, the following song is called “The Beach Song.”
So what is one going to expect from this record. A lot. A huge step up from their previous record Broom. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin really brings that 70’s/80’s feel to the modern day listener. Pershing is one of those records where you don’t want to skip a song because it’s that damn catchy. So sit back, go get a Snapple, relax to some television and let the boys ease your stress away.
